Is your air conditioning not cooling? These are the most frequent causes
When summer comes and air conditioning does not cool, the problem may be due to incorrect configuration, lack of maintenance or a technical breakdown.
At Aquavila we carry out maintenance and air conditioning repair in Ibiza for homes, villas, tourist apartments and businesses.
1. The equipment is configured incorrectly
Check that the controller is in mode Cool, usually represented by a snowflake. Fan mode only moves the air in the room, but does not cool it.
You must also select a temperature lower than the current temperature of the room.
2. Filters are dirty
The accumulation of dust hinders air circulation and reduces the performance of the equipment. As a consequence, the air conditioning can cool less, generate bad odors and consume more electricity.
During the months of greatest use, it is advisable to check and clean the filters periodically following the manufacturer's instructions.
3. Outdoor unit is locked
The outdoor unit needs enough space to expel heat. Leaves, dirt, furniture or any object blocking ventilation can affect system operation.
You can visually check that there are no obstacles, but you should not disassemble or manipulate the unit.
4. There is a refrigerant leak
If the appliance expels air, but fails to cool it, there could be a loss of refrigerant.
The coolant should not disappear under normal use. Therefore, performing a recharge without first locating and repairing the possible leak does not usually solve the problem definitively.
This check must be carried out by a specialized air conditioning technician.
5. The equipment has ice or drips water
Clogged filters, poor air circulation or certain malfunctions can cause ice to form on the indoor unit.
Water may also appear around the split when the drain is blocked or incorrectly installed. If you see ice or drips, turn off the equipment and request a professional inspection.
6. The air conditioning does not have enough power
Equipment that is too small for the room can operate continuously without reaching a comfortable temperature.
The surface, orientation, insulation, windows and direct exposure to the sun influence the necessary power, especially in homes and villas in Ibiza.
What can you check before calling a technician?
Before requesting a repair you can:
- Check that Cool mode is activated.
- Check the selected temperature.
- Change the remote control batteries.
- Clean the filters.
- Check that the air vents are not blocked.
- Visually check the outdoor unit.
Do not attempt to disassemble the equipment, manipulate electrical components or recharge the coolant yourself.
When do you need a professional repair?
Contact a technician if the air conditioning:
- It does not cool after cleaning the filters.
- Water is dripping or ice is present.
- Produces noise or vibrations.
- Gives off a musty or burnt smell.

Frequently asked questions
Why does the air conditioning work but not cool?
The most common causes are dirty filters, incorrect configuration, lack of ventilation in the outdoor unit or a technical fault.
Is it enough to recharge the coolant?
Not necessarily. If refrigerant is missing, it must first be checked for leaks and repaired.
How often should the air conditioning be checked?
In a home it is advisable to carry out a periodic inspection, preferably before summer. Businesses and accommodations with heavy use may require more frequent maintenance.
